Birth of the Twins Naayééʼ Neizghání's story is kind of an odd one. So to understand the background, there weren't many people around when she was born. It was a time pre-history, back when the world was first made and the people had begun to populate it. They weren't the only things that populated it. The land was overrun with Monsters, made from, I shit you not, Masturbation. You heard it here kids. These monsters were born when Men and Women had been split by their gender, and so women had used objects of nature for sex since they had no men around. This somehow got them pregnant and they had deformed, monster kids whom they dumped out in the wild to die. They didn't die. They grew up and started eating people. So now the people of the world were being killed by monsters in droves, and the land itself was fraught with Danger. Then, one day, a woman named Asdzą́ą́ Nádleehé (Changing Woman), was made pregnant by a ray of sunlight sent by the Sun. Yeah, appaerantly anything can get you pregnant back in the old days. Anyways, she had an usually short pregnancy-- That is, instead of nine months she got through that whole annoying pregnancy thing in nine days. Or maybe it was a metaphor because everything was "days" back then. Fuck if I know. So Nine "Days" later, out pops some twins, one girl and then one boy. The twins grow pretty quickly, once again with the whole "Days instead of Years" thing. As they grew, their uncles-but-not whom were something akin to Demigods challenged them to races constantly. Every race, they'd whip the twins as they raced directly behind them to encourage them to go faster, and then sprinted ahead of them at the end to win. This continued as the Twins grew, until eventually the twins were fast enough to outrun the douchebag demigods, whom decidedly did a sage nod and said "YOU ARE READY" then vanished. What were they ready for you ask? Pissing off all those previously mentioned man-eating monsters. First of all, the twins got justifiably curious about the whole "who is our Dad?" thing, so they asked their Mom. Who decidedly said "YOU HAVE NO FATHER", because that makes sense and isn't kind of a bitch move or anything. The twins pressed but she just continously told them to fuck off about it. So eventually the twins go out hunting to earn their keep, and ended up driving off a Raven. Whom reported to one of those man eating Monsters. The next day they did the same thing to a Vulture, then to a Magpie. Turns out all birds of prey answered to monsters of some sort. Their mother, in despair, cast an enchantment around their home that would ward the monsters away, but only for a day. The twins decided it was time they got out of dodge, so the Monsters wouldn't come and kill everyone they knew and loved. Instead they'd be out chasing them across the land. So they bolted under the cover of darkness, and went off to the East, the only direction not filled completely with monsters. Journey to the Sun While on their way, they met Naʼashjéʼii Asdzą́ą́, Spider Woman. This old woman told them that they did in fact, have a dad [shocking], and that he was the Sun. [Actually shocking.] She fashioned them a charm to protect them from the elements, instructed them how to use it, and sent them on a journey to the east, to meet their dad. They went, and after a myriad of obstacles, showed up in the house of Jóhonaaʼéí [The Sun], claiming themselves as his kids. This prompty pissed off his "wife", the mother of one of the monsters. However, after they proved themselves as actually being his kids [Mostly because the Wind told them how to avoid dying in all his tests], he acknowledged them as being his children. They told him why they had sought him out: To gain weaponry to slay the monsters that plagued their people. He gifted them with divine arrows, armor of flint and blades of obsidian, before sending them on a rainbow bridge back to the land from whence they had came. Specifically, directly in front of the monster known as Yéʼiitsoh (Big Giant), whom was also a child of Jóhonaaʼéí. Slayer of Alien Gods With some help from Jóhonaaʼéí, and some from the Wind, the twins struck down Yéʼiitsoh, with the elder sister striking the final blow while the younger brother carved the scalp of the dead monster. And for this, they named each other Naayééʼ Neizghání (Monster Slayer) and Naʼídígishí (He Who Cuts Life Out of the Enemy). The triumphant twins returned home to their family, and proudly told them of their accomplishment, showing them the scalp as proof. They danced, sang and rejoiced the night away. But this was not enough. The next day, Naayééʼ Neizghání was determined not to stay. Her family warned her that the other monsters could not be slain, but she set off regardless, instructing her brother to remain at home and guard the family. She left two enchanted reeds so he would know if she was in danger, and set off. And so, one by one, each a tale of it's own, she slew the all the monsters across the land. And each time, the battle took it's toll on her, warping her more and more into an existance made purely for fighting and killing, until she forgot how to function as a human being. Eventually, before she set off to face the last four monsters, her family stopped her, and preformed the first Enemy Way ceremony, restoring her mental balance to her. Journey to the Four Hags After the ceremony was complete, Naayééʼ Neizghání set off for her final venture. She came across the human personifications of Winter, Old Age, Hunger and Poverty, and to each she stated her intention to slay them. As they were defenseless, she made them aware of her intentions before slaying them. Each responded with a calm rationale, accepting their death but in the end convincing Naayééʼ Neizghání to let them live, so that mankind might still progress and grow rather than become stagnant. Realizing her journey was done, she set down her arms, and realized her task was over. She laid down her divine arms, and "retired" to become merely a warrior. The world continued to move; Her father reclaimed his divine weaponry and brought Asdzą́ą́ Nádleehé to live with him in the sky, making her immortal. Naayééʼ Neizghání herself settled down with two wives, and eventually moved to Tó Aheedlí, and lived out the rest of her days in the shadow of the mountain, growing old and dying. After her death, Naayééʼ Neizghání was remembered as a masculine spirit. Probably do to the fact she liked chicks [If you didn't pick up on the Wives things] and that she was the epitome of the Warrior spirit, a decidedly male role. Additionally, the oral tradition of the myth caused some inconsistencies to occur, and the changing of her gender to be more role appropriate was a fairly early change made. |
