It was a cold and stormy night…
…just like every other night in Chaldea, frankly. But, in this case, it really was a storm, even by their standards – a blizzard that wracked the steels complex’s walls, making rooms shudder and groan. Chaldea was an incredibly well-constructed and secretive facility, but there was only so much you could do about nature’s wrath in such a dangerous environment for humans. While the living complexes and major research sections were made faultless, deep within the building; the outer sections were less secure. Total heating and lighting was a luxury, after all; and the energy needed to upkeep it in every warehouse and hallway was immense… so there had to be some corners cut.
And in one of those corners was where Kinu found himself on this bitter evening. Honestly, it was something he was used to – the division tasked with his analysis was now exceedingly small compared to how it had started, as Chaldea certainly had bigger things on their mind at this point. Thus the section he headed to for his check-ups was just one of many medical quarters, and as one of the least important tasks it was left in a particularly uncared for corner of the magus’ facility. Ironically, however, in this case he was left in a far more notable area – one of the outer segments of the living quarters, a rare room that was lined with windows – rather than just another empty hall. As he had been moving through, a blizzard had struck with little warning outside. No doubt short-lived given its invisible approach, but with enough ferocity to chill the electronics and make further intervention risky; leaving the room in lock-down for the time-being.
While some around him were confused by the sudden light outage and the whir of the heating slowing to a halt, Kinu seemed almost meditative as he set about the scripted reaction to such issues; sparking a match and soon illuminating a little corner of the room with candlelight – such a strange sight amongst all the fluorescent murk that encompassed the complex. Well, the strangest sight was still Kinu, though. The shut-off had been during his return from a check-up, and so at the moment he was caught in his kitsune-based body; tails and ears out for all to see. He didn’t much like the attention… but the extra fur was a bit nice in this cold.
Kneeling on the floor besides a few of the emergency candles he had habitually slipped out despite the flashlights on offer, Kinu was at peace. A pleasant aroma filled the air as Kagero’s habits were indulged once more; as the boy poured a thermos cap of hojicha tea… amongst all his chilly compatriots, he just seemed happy. His more recent stitches hurt a bit, and the cold was all the worse for his fragile body than for any human; but he was happy in this little moment. It was quiet, and it was peaceful. Tugging his scarf tighter, Kinu’s tails waved contently in the chilly air… but he got the feeling he wouldn’t be able to enjoy this solitude for too long, given both his current state and the number of others in the room.

‘Power outage?’Annoyed, Miska looked around the room towards the many silhouettes also seemingly annoyed and slightly panicking. It was his bad luck that made her check-up to be conducted on this facility. He was being prepared for a mission using the new Venetia Gear, and so some sort of health check-up needed to be done. But while others were directed to the research division, Miska was sent to a more general facility. It wasn’t bad, considering he didn’t even have to undress. But then this power outage happened and he was locked in here for how long he didn’t know. Worse, he didn’t bring any flashlight, and the free ones that had been distributed missed him because he was too small to fight in the queue. Thus Miska was left in the dark, at the mercy of flashlight-wielders. *bump*A nurse bumped her from the side and sent her reeling backwards. Walking around among people taller than herself was not easy, and neither was standing still for hours among them. She needed to find a safer spot to wait out the blizzard. A simple spell would have increased her eyes effectiveness in detecting light. But in this situation, if one inadvertently directed their flashlight to her eyes while being amplified the result could be disastrous for her vision. Braving another two or three bumps while snaking his way out of the valley of peoples, Miska finally saw a safe haven. On one corner was a small empty space illuminated by a single candle, wonderfully vacant from adult footsteps. A faint aroma ( ‘Tea?’) emanated from the corner, and Miska could see another small silhouette half-hidden by the candlelight. When he got closer it seemed that the silhouette had…fox ears. But after seeing Rider’s Noble Phantasm nothing could surprise him anymore. Maneuvering silently to the place, Miska took a second to watch her would-be companion from the fringes of the candle-light. It seemed to be a young...something. Young, fox-eared and fox-tailed furry boy that was calmly sipping tea in this darkness. Miska could not decide whether it was a ghost or not, or if it was another Heroic Spirit. But the light of the candles was inviting.... So, without ceremony Miska walked to the corner and sat hunched across the boy on the other wall of the corner, careful not to intrude on the fox’s privacy while making sure that she still got some light. She only wanted to wait this out, that’s all. She folded her legs and drew her knees to her chin, with only her bright eyes shown underneath the fiery red hairs. *** I hope Kinu doesn't mind company~ Tagging: Kinu

Sitting silently, Kinu just ignored the original series of bumps around them – it wasn’t any sort of surprise to him given the situation, and with all the people about. But, he would certainly notice the person who had in turn noticed him; albeit giving the red-haired youth only a quick glance at first… he was being stared at, again. Well, it wasn’t entirely unwelcome at this point… at least to someone here, as Kagero was all too eager for company. Good thing she couldn’t speak… good thing Kinu couldn’t speak. As the boy seemed to close in, though… boy? Probably; he’d just stick with that; as the boy seemed to close in, though; the homunculus got all the more nervous. What did they do now? He was coming closer – the corner was otherwise untouched. Maybe he was passing by? Maybe he was just having a look? B-But, he was sitting down now… the boy’s vulpine ears twitched nervously as Kinu glanced away awkwardly; trying to sort of ignore the boy’s presence; although his attention was being dragged back by his unlikely host. Red hair, nice eyes, funny outfit, though… n-no, it was rude to stare. Tails flicking irritably, Kinu did his utmost to just ignore Miska when he first sat down… a-ah, now he was just scared! But, as Miska stayed quiet, Kinu calmed down a fair bit… this wasn’t so bad. He liked the quiet, at least like this… well, listening was okay too. He felt a bit rude now, just sitting like this… it was a weird feeling for him; no doubt another one of Kagero’s influences. He’d never act like this otherwise; he’d rather be on his own! But right now… he’d like to listen. Seeming to calm down for the moment, Kinu gently raised his thermos again and refilled his makeshift cup of tea… before sliding it over to his unlikely compatriot. Ears bending down shyly while his tails began to wave more calmly, Kinu just watched Miska silently; perplexed… pretty, he was pretty, wasn’t he? And his eyes were very nice… maybe he wasn’t so scary. But, he seemed young, too; so small! Just like Kinu, really… well, not that short! Nervously leaning forward a little, the boy just stared expectantly at Miska… err, what if he didn’t like green tea?! *** The more the merrier; just don't expect conversation, hahah. Tagging: Miska

Funny… Miska could feel the boy staring at her even while she secretly stared at him from the corner of her eyes at the same time. He seemed…young. Too young to be here with a first-rate murderer such as Genghis Khan. But those ears… and … tails? Perhaps he was a Servant, too? A child Servant… Miska was a believer in strict teaching, but to let this kid in battlefield? Miska could even cradle him and rocked him to sleep even with her small arms… A glass of tea was slid towards him and Miska’s gazed shifted for real. She looked at the glass for some time, before looking towards the boy and back to the glass. And returned back to him with a smile. “Thank you. But I am not thirsty.”Funny kid. Didn’t he realized that he had just sipped from that glass before refilling it and offered the same glass to another person? It was dirty! Disentangling one of her hands from their lock at her knees, Miska pushed the glass back politely towards the boy and wrapped her hands around her knees again, with her face half hidden. She stole a glance at the boy for time to time, though, curious at the courtesy. *** Hehe, Miska did not expect it either~ Watching: Kinu

Kinu gave an awkward expression upon having his treat returned to him – err, what did he do now? Appreciation, but humility? He wasn’t quite sure how to react… as usual. Looking between the tea and his odd guest, the little fox just looked very confused. Well, there was a smile, so things were probably alright! Those yellow eyes, though… maybe it was just their match his red hair, but they seemed a bit threatening. D-Did he not like green tea, maybe? Kinu gave a stupefied look, tilting his head to one side while his ears twitched idly. Well… this company wasn’t unwelcome thus far, at least. He was quiet… Shivering as he recognised the chilly air again, Kinu’s tails twisted around his body for warmth – although it looks as if the boy was just trying to withdraw into his own shell of fluff. Just watching the red-haired soul before him, the homunculus stayed silent for a moment… before deciding it fair to at least give an explanation. Gently ruffling about in their blazer, another object was soon slid over to Miska – one of Chaldea’s ID badges; printed with Kinu’s name as well as his other administrative details… though that might sink the boy’s Servant theory with his position. Watching carefully for a response, Kinu remained silent as he peered at Miska – curiosity, or just shyness? Or something a bit more malicious? The homunculus himself probably couldn’t answer that; he wasn’t really used to this sort of situation. Experience was important, though; right? So… he shuffled ever so slightly closer to his unlikely guest… *** Sorry about the wait! Watching: Miska

As the fox-Servant stayed silent, so did Miska, although she did glance at him from time to time. Whenever she glanced at him, he was glancing at the tea. And whenever she returned her gaze to herself, he was glancing at her. The boy seemed oddly shy… That hazel eyes of him seemed looking at anywhere other than her. Was she that scary? Maybe she should not have smiled? Maybe this Servant came from a world where smile is threatening? Or maybe she should have received the tea? Maybe she had offended him somehow? Thus the funny back-and-forth glances went a while, a world of its own underneath the giant boots still looking for a way out this room. And then the other party made a movement. Miska’s eyebrows raised in an “Oh?” as the Fox-thing slid a badge towards him. Mr. Wakahisa Kinu. Provisional Master... Provisional Master!? Miska’s glance shifted at the boy before quickly returning back in fear of being taken as offensive. ‘Someone this young? Provisional Master? Wait, wait. Age… Status… Oh, he is a homunculus…’.Miska did not have many experience with homunculus. But coming from a line of ancient family he naturally knew a lot about that artificial creation. It was strange knowing why would anyone made a homunculus with fox ears and tails though… Perhaps they were fusing two things together? Would-would he bite? Has he been vaccinated against rabies? Miska lingered for a while before determining her response. She had not been in this kind of situation before so she wasn’t really sure…. He told her who he was so she had to return the favor right? A respected Lord always do that… Erm, he did not talk so maybe he was mute and deaf? Should she speak in signs, then? Miska was about to spell her name with a sign before another thought suggested that the homunculus might be offended if she thought he was mute and deaf. What to do… Return the favor… Slid him her ID too? Yes! That’s the best way! Reaching to his pocket for his ID card, Miska instead found another surprise along with his card. Two individually-packed, Udarnitsa brand of single Chocolate-coated Zefir so ubiquitous in the vending machines. The boy had tried to be courteous so a good noble should do the same, right? So, in an unintentionally similar way Miska slid his own ID to the boy. The two cards laid side by side perfectly symmetrical, like two business cards in a business meeting. In Miska’s card was his photo and Number, with Miska Kopparsvärd printed in larger letters. Additionally, Miska put a piece of the confectionary, still pristine and plastic-packaged along with his ID card. But then as if having a second thought, Miska drew his own piece and put it near the boy’s ID card so that in the end, there were two cards and two plastic packages between the two strangers. ‘Don’t worry. I am offering you something I’d like to eat myself. It’s not a poison,’ was the message Miska intended to say by her gesture. But-but maybe the boy does not like sweets? Or sweets are poisonous for homunculus? Or would he be offended being offered sweets? Miska stayed on her place, still with knees drawn to her chin, only glancing slightly at the boy to show him that she was waiting…. *** Waiting: KinuDon't worry! Oh, aren't they being naturally cute~

Kinu watched closely as Miska read his identification; his stoicism dropping a little bit to make room for a pinch of childish anxiety – maybe it looked cute, maybe it looked unsettling; but it was at least a little more receptive than just glancing away all the time. Still, the little fox was all too curious about the other soul’s reaction… oh, but they just looked back at him! Kinu quickly glanced away again, childishly trying to hide their interest – well, this was just getting silly now. Ears twitching nervously, Kinu was once again trapped in a loop of naïve intentions thanks to Miska’s presence… Thankfully, it seemed the human was about as pensive as he was; as Kinu waited patiently for a response from the boy – it was nice to deal with someone quiet and gentle, compared to all the rowdy warriors the Servant fuss had led to. Plus the more… charismatic scientists. And the magus with egos… well, Kinu was almost glad they were a failed experiment rather than the centre of attention at times like those. Still, they didn’t look angry, disgusted, or utterly intent on touching his tails. That was always a plus! Oh, and they were cute, too… ah, Kagero was doing their own thing again, wasn’t she…? While distracted by a certain kitsune’s usual mischievousness, Kinu jolted to attention again upon being met with a second ID card – w-well, of course he’d offer that, that was the obvious response… why was he so nervous right now? Despite their attempts to mimic other homunculus’ stoic natures and distant attitudes, Kinu was blatantly more emotive than his usual compatriots; darting between flustered and awkward expressions like a kid being asked about school for the first time. Burying their nose into their scarf a little, Kinu was briefly pensive before daring to investigate the business card; carefully picking it up while watching Miska’s face for any suggestion of irritation or refusal – magus were hard to read! Especially when they didn’t talk… oh, was this boy mute, too? Was this sort of confusion how people felt around him…? Ooh, he felt bad now… Reading the card, the boy nodded a little… they were in about the same boat, weren’t they? Though, he seemed to have a much more proper name than Kinu. For a few seconds, the would-be kitsune sat and tried to figure out how Miska’s name would be pronounced in his head; lost in his childish curiosity – before remembering the red-haired boy still looking at him… and the packaged things beside the card. And, some hand gestures…? There was a smile, and open arms, so it was okay? Was it his? Kinu would slowly take just one, seeming a bit like a punished puppy testing the waters for the first time, still watching Miska’s face for further response – all still seemed well, so… Kinu would lovingly unwrap the treat, urged on by the curiosity of both youth and old. Ah, and the chocolate! The scent immediately set off alarm bells; this was something nice! Although his experience with oriental cuisine was mostly centred around savoury and spicy flavours; the presence of so much Western food around Chaldea had opened Kinu’s eyes to more typical European treats… so this particular taste was quite familiar. The boy’s eyes would sparkle for a moment as he gazed at the sweet; tails waving with a little more energy; and… a smile, for a just a moment? A-Ah, no no, he was supposed to be all stoic and serious right now! Darn! He’d lost ground already… *** Waiting: MiskaDo foxes get sick like dogs if you give them chocolate, though...?

Miska felt a flush of relief as Kinu accepted his treat. He was half-afraid that homunculi would find it offensive being offered food. A long time ago, someone told him that homunculi subsisted on prana alone, and that they have their own ethics different than Magus. But its seemed that it was not the case with this homunculi…err, fused-fox. Perhaps it had something with to do with him being more like a chimera than a homunculi… As Kinu opened the zefir pack, Miska reached for her own and opened it too. They ate it only seconds apart, with Miska watching closely the fused-fox reaction as often as she dared. Do…do foxes get sick like dogs if you give them chocolate? She never had pets so before so she wasn’t even sure about the dog part. Once again, she only remembered it from a book somewhere. But the fox sure looked happy! Even alternating his glances, Miska could well see the sparkle in the boy’s eyes and a dreamy expression that swept over his eyes. Behind him his tails (?!) waved with a little more energy, which for Miska suggested that he was pleased. Miska smiled in tandem, and continue munching his own zefir. “Delicious, isn’t it?” she said warmly. But remembering that her earlier remarks of “Thank you, but I am not thirsty” might not be heard, she added obvious gestures to her words. As of now Miska had come to a conclusion that the boy was deaf. Unfortunately, something brewed among the adults jammed in this dark room. “Hey now. You don’t have to do that.”
“It’s your fault, damn it! Why did you tinker with the machine just now?”
“The hell I know?! Ask the supervisor!”Miska’s head turned warily towards a small a rowdy congregate of people slowly forming among the adults. It seemed that they had started to feel being trapped in this situation unbearable, and now was lashing out at even the smallest friction. Other people gathered trying to mediate the angry people, but some only made it worse. “You’re blaming me?!”
“No. But it’s clear, isn’t it?”
“Kepp your hands off! What are you implying?!”
“I told you not to touch me, dammit!”An uppercut was unleashed. A large man, dazzled, staggered backwards and tripped. A mass of almost one hundred kilos fell on top of Miska! “…!”There was no room to get out of the way. Miska suddenly felt something heavy pushing him down and an elbow hitting his jaw hard. He laid still for a moment, confused. Stars and comets were swimming in his sight… The man did not even say sorry. He quickly get up and, roaring like a Berserker, charged towards the first man. Other people had joined the fray, while some only screamed and frantically trying to get out. Another group of people was bantering punches when they steered towards the two small figures and tripped Kinu’s pot, spilling all its content in the floor… *** KinuChanging the scenery!

Miska’s friendly reply made Kinu’s day, honestly; warming him up from the heart – yes, it was a delicious! Finally feeling properly comfortable, the boy would seem to settle down a lot; smiling properly at last. This was nice! Though, the weird gestures were a bit… oh, well, weird. Unfortunately, Kinu’s grasp at happiness had to be short-lived… it was a homunculus thing, wasn’t it? Artificial things never had good luck. It must come with the divine business or something. Or maybe it was just Kagero’s bad karma… in any case, the boy’s smile quickly flipped upside down. The rowdy crowd made the tiny fox shiver – and not from the cold this time. Timid as a mouse, Kinu was not pleased to be around so many people… much less so many annoyed people. His ears curled back, and his tail grew ruffled from the stress; while he began to bury himself into his scarf once again. But, he refused to even look, instead just drawing inwards away from all the hustle and bustle. He’d like to just leave, run away… but, no such luck. The fear that always came with the steel corridors… a fox in a cage. Well, Kinu didn’t mind so much… but… The poor boy would jolt onto his feet upon seeing his unlikely companion earn a new occupation as a seat, his scarf practically seeming to end up ruffled alongside his black fur – a look of a shock, then sympathy. Miska probably wasn’t in any state to appreciate it, of course. And Kinu could not even offer any words of comfort. His heart hurt a bit… while a little spark ignited somewhere deeper. Annoyance, anger, revenge; words matched to things he could not feel. Or should not feel. Magic stung at his mouth; temptations that were almost realised – but, the host came out on top, this time. Besides, tear gas wasn’t going to help in this sort of scuffle! Yet, watching their tiny thermos spill; Kinu’s heart jumped again. No, more than that, seeing their lovingly started candle flicker out from the movement in turn; that was what made him feel more upset. Hard work, gone… oh, and Miska! He’d been so rude! Freaking out on the spot with a surprised expression and a lot of awkward twitching; the poor homunculus had no idea how to act. Fight or flight? He dearly wanted to run away into the darkness of the hallway, back the way he came, but… Miska needed some love and attention. Time to walk a fine line… or, more aptly, to be a coward. Tugging his scarf protectively for a moment, Kinu hesitated as he stared at Miska… but, he steeled himself for his choice; gently diving over the boundary of uneasiness that plagued his life. Unravelling his scarf with a hasty twirl of his hands; the boy spiralled the item back around the red-haired soul’s neck while they were still in their unfortunate daze. A signal of thanks, or a signal of apology? Even Kinu seemed unsure. But, they could not even communicate that much in this state. Giving but a pitying glance and a weak nod; the fox became a twirl of black tails, a tear or two flicking out into the air with the movement. And with that, the boy made his characteristic move – running away, once more. Blazer flickering in the air, the fox flew like an actual member of his kind; darting into the swallowing darkness with practiced ease. His heart shook, but it the comfort of fleeing was more important to him right now… and besides, what could he even do? Though, that boy now knew his name… maybe he’d come back for revenge for his chocolate or something. Well, Kinu would just have to make something in return, someday… as much as his heart twisted at the thought of his little room’s sanctuary being punctured, the thought wasn’t entirely unpleasant… *** Miska So sorry about the long wait! Christmas ended up busier than expected… but, I hope you had happy holidays, too!
