NAME: Ruari Baltan Arascain
[PTabbedContent][PTab=APPEARANCE]
Of an average height standing at roughly 5’6’’ Ruairi is the poster child for what first comes to mind when ‘Celtic woman’ is said, with dark green eyes and long, red hair that reaches past her back. Her hair is often partially tied back with a black ribbon while at Chaldea, with most of her hair hanging loose, but will usually tie it up in the event of a mission or some sort of heavy duty work. She’s somewhat baby faced, especially with the freckles on her face, and doesn’t quite look like a woman in her mid-twenties, supposedly it’s a family thing as her mother looks rather young too. Ruairi is a victim of resting bitch face, because of this she seems to look snooty or forever annoyed at something, given her low tolerance for antics and shenanigans she might just be in a perpetual annoyance at the universe in general.
She is rather slender with some muscle mass from her work with creatures of all sorts, she’s surprisingly strong considering her body type but she’s not the type to go around and do activities that showcase said strength. As for clothing, her current ensemble can only be described as somewhat...cleric-ish, it appears to be either a black dress with a sort of overly complex cream coat with black accents, hell maybe it's just one whole robe that you put over your head really no one's sure and she's sure as hell not telling. True mystery.
She is almost never seen without her familiar Tam Lin (named after the Scottish figure, nicknamed Tam for short) or a long chain, which she uses as a belt. Obviously these aren't fashion accessories but hey, what's a gal to do?

[PTab=PERSONALITY]
Before ye start wondering what people think of ye, ask yerself this. Why do ye evan care? These are the seventeen words that Ruari Baltan Arascain lives by, if only because she has a very self-assured approach to life, you can’t be the type to be unsure when you’re working with what could be dangerous creatures (and dangerous people). It would be wrong to call it a killer confidence as it is more along the lines thinking two steps ahead of anyone she’s interacting with but she exudes a sort of dangerous aura with her sharp green eyes and impeccable poise. There’s definitely something about her that makes her seem like the perfect, cold hearted magus at first sight and second sight and if you’ve not spoken to her, then probably the third as well. But the second she opens her mouth the illusion is more or less shattered, because the first thing she usually says to anyone is snarky, rude or just plain blunt—and said in a rather thick highland Scottish accent. Which is a contrast to her appearance entirely, long story short Ruari definitely isn’t what she appears to be.
Somewhat introverted she has an easier time connecting to the wants and needs of the creatures her family has than actual human beings, particularly the more conventional magi but she’s charismatic in her own way, as some people find her snarking unintentionally humorous and when they get to know her the starry eyed idealism (supported by the idea that nothing is impossible without enough work and knowledge) and dreams are somewhat endearing. She spends a lot of her time studying, expanding her knowledge and her understanding of both her craft and the world around her she’s the type to take note of anything she finds interesting and will often study something in further depth if it catches her eye which has led to her looking up the weirdest things for the sake of just knowing something about it. It’s a driving force for her, she has a real need to be a bit of a know it all—it annoys her when someone is able to talk for lengths about something she has absolutely no clue about (however she’s very capable of talking the talk with confidence, a trait learned from watching her mother’s small, political mistakes). For Ruari, knowledge isn’t power, it’s a comfort that she finds herself in constant need of.
She tends to see things as they are for face value, including herself, and when it comes to people one could say that she doesn’t really know anyone. She can see logic behind actions but never quite the feelings, so she definitely can’t connect to fictional people or the hard headed/dumb protagonist types of the world who seem to be fuelled on their feelings alone. In fact when faced with someone like that she often finds herself becoming a lot more cynical than needed and even more exasperated. She just finds them stupid. In reality, she’s probably the one who needs to give her head a wobble. It takes a ‘special’ sort of person to catch her attention well enough for her to attempt to make a bond first, although what counts as special changes with the days of the week and an attribute that catches her eye with one person might be the very reason she detests another.

[PTab=HISTORY]
The Arascain family is an old magi family originating from the Isle of Skye, although traditionally a male dominated family the family’s first head was a woman, and a recent trend in female heads (due to nothing more than coincidence) has led to them being considered a matriarchal magi family. A family with a lot of land and influence, they are arguably the most influential/powerful family in the Isle of Skye and to some, some contest even the highlands of Scotland. The family has a focus on zoology, specializing in the study and recuperation of phantasmal species as such they belong to a sub-division of the Zoology department within the Clocktower and have dominated. Due to a history of breeding strong horses in an attempt to recreate unicorns, each-uisge and kelpies a lot of their vast fortune has been generated by the horse racing market. As such, the past three generations of the family (Ruari included) are incredibly talented riders.
Born in the Isle of Skye to the head of the family Ruadia and her husband Seamus, the second son of an Irish family selected more for his circuit quantity and quality than his winning personality Ruairidh Baltan Arascain (often written as Ruairí to prevent problems with pronunciation) was the only child born from their marriage after years of trying. At four the painful process of the transfer of the family began and so did any role her mother had in her life as her mother. She was raised to be the head of the family from birth, the only contact she had with her mother past the age of five was something to do with her studies and her family’s work. The only parent she had in a conventional sense was her father, who did all the cooking, cleaning and general taking care of her—he took the role many would consider ‘womanly’ so his wife, a woman he didn’t particularly like or love, could devote her time to her craft. Any time spent with her mother was time spent with a ‘coworker’ and ‘another user of her craft’ rather than a ‘mother’ and that was only solidified when her father died when she was seven. Seamus, deciding that now was a decent enough time to leave his wife and child to assist his brother in some research travelled to Africa, hoping to carry the luggage while his brother did some research on leylines or something. Of course this holiday did not go well for him beginning with terrible sunburn, because the world is a bitch to decent parents, within two weeks he was killed. Although her mother wasn’t particularly concerned by her husband’s untimely demise Ruari was—her only real family was gone leaving her with only her family’s work and the little free time her mother offered her in between such times.
From the age of eight she spent most of her time with her nose in the books, taking care of the creatures under her mother’s care and accompanying her mother whenever she had ‘magi business’ to learn by example. And learn by example she did, while she was much warmer as a child and generally happier she became a bit more cold and distant, the type to let her voice known through backhanded compliments and sarcastic comments rather than being cordial about such things. She saw no point in the political games her mother was much more adept at playing than she was, even if circumstance sometimes forced her to play along. It did not gain her much popularity with the people her mother spoke with, but did very little to affect their family’s standing, mostly because of their resources and the fact that the girl would soon be head.
When she was sixteen she became briefly engaged to a French magus from a dying line, but quickly broke it off on her own accord with a mixture of her rather harsh words, general lack of interesting in the young man. Later she would admit that this was because she couldn’t possibly take a man who considered the continuation of his family more important than the development of his family’s goals and magecraft, she considered it better to die great than live on as a shadow of their former selves. Plus he found her intimidating for some reason. So she got rid of him. End of. The incident was the first of many that gave Ruari a drive to become greater than her mother and any member of the family before her, she practiced daily, studied theory diligently and created several familiars for practice. A year or so later she officially began her studies at Clock Tower.
Her offer from Chaldea wasn’t particularly interesting at face value, but it fit quite nicely with her family’s want to recreate phantasmal species—what better way to study them than to go back in time right? Asking a friend (read: unsuspecting idiot) to pack her multitude of belongings away for her, she moved as soon as possible eager to see what Chaldea could do for her in return.

Name: Tam, the each-uisge
Spell Rank:B-A+
Effects:
An each-uisge (known in the zoology department as Equus amphibius hepatico) is a shapeshifting water horse, said to be the most vicious of the water horses (which tend to be pretty damn vicious), Tam is one of the specimens bred by the Arascain family and while his usual form is similar to that of some bizarre pig-newt adorable monstrosity, he is a carnivorous and somewhat vicious pink ball of...not fluff when not pleased.Clearly there's something about looking horrifically adorable that mellows a beast out. At B Rank he is unable to display his true pedigree as a beast however he is able to shoot out small balls of a dark green, adhesive muk-like substance from his mouth, like a little cannon. The gooey substance is hard to remove with brute strength alone, as it can resist several tons of force and requires a specific counter spell to dissolve (although Ruari doesn't have to be the one to say said spell). Tam can also dispel it under command. Creatures such as Tam Lin have their own prana furnaces so the supply of this substance is nigh endless, in fact the raw pressure at which the goo is fired can heavily damage much like a water cannon.
More than anything else, Tam is Ruari's own favourite familiar. He is surprisingly tame considering how close he is to a full each-uisge of old, and she can usually keep him under control. Make no mistake however, he is a creature that does not mix well with the world of man.
