She lived during a period of conflict with the English known as the Hundred Years War, that was a long tiring battle between the French and English that had periods of truces and conflicts which lasted from 1337 to 1453. A few years before she was born, a political split within who should rule France during the King Charles VI's madness was formed after the assassination of the duke of Orléans, Louis d'Orléans, into two factions the Armagnacs who sided with the deceased duke of Orléans and the dauphin, and the Burgundians, who side with the English and the duke of Burgundy. Early in Joan's life, the King of England, Henry V, took advantage of France's political weakness by invading and in 1415 won a major victory in Agincourt and captured much of Northern France. From her testimony during her trail, she revealed that she could not read or write but knew all the proper religious prayers. She was a peasant and daughter of Sheppard who sometimes watched over her father's flock, and assisted in the household work was proficient in doing so. During these times, her village was loyal to the dauphin even while being surrounded by Burgundy lands, so the constant wars may have had an effect on her desire to bring the dauphin to power. Character Details 3 During her life in her village she is known for her being well conducted toward her parents and her unselfish kindness toward the people of her village. When Joan was 12 years she " had become imbued with a sense of having a mission to free France from the English." as it was at this time that she claimed to have first started to see her "visions". This sense of purpose may be a reason for her solitude in her early womanhood, before leaving for her journey. In 1428, when she was 16 years old she set forth on her journey to free France from English control and bring aid to the dauphin. On " May 1428 she tried to obtain from Robert de Baudricourt, governor of Vaucouleurs, an introduction to the dauphin, saying that God would send him aid, but she was rebuffed." However, later during September, the English began to invest heavily on Orléans in order to take southern France. During this time, she renewed her efforts with the governor to see the dauphin and through persistent effort was allowed to meet with the dauphin in February 1429 and accompanied by six guards set forth to the dauphin at Chinon. Character Details 4 At first during her arrival the dauphin refused to see her, but after pressure from advisers at her popularity convinced the dauphin to grant her an interview. During this interview, Joan was tested by the dauphin and later passed and gained his favor. After having her faith and virginity examined and proven, she was given equipment and an army of 4000 to 5000 men to lay siege to Orléans. On April 29 th 1429, Joan successfully entered Orléans, and began her unrelenting siege of the city. On May 8 th the English in Orléans surrendered, and it was after this her first major victory where she earned her nickname "The Maid of Orléans". After other successful battles Joan persuaded the dauphin to set to Reims, in which he entered with an army of 12,000 on July 16 th, and on the July 17 th in the Cathedral Charles VII coronation was held. Later, Joan was sent to capture Paris by King Charles and after a failed attempt on September 8 th, Joan was wounded, and the troops she lead disbanded. She then returned to King Charles VII's court in December. In March of 1430, she rode from the court to assist Compiègne against the forces of the duke of Burgundy. On May 24 th she lead an unsuccessful attack against the besiegers and was captured. After being held prisoner by the Burgundy, she was later handed over to the English in November. Character Details 5 Her trial then began on January 9 th 1431 and lasted six days. Another trial was held while she was in prison. Then on March 20 th she was publically accused of heresy and was later declared guilty. On the 24 th of May she made a submission with the court and was given a pardon though still under held by the English, after promising among other things to stop wearing men's clothing. After failing to stop wearing men's clothes, which went against the oath she made to stop wearing them, she was found to have been relapsed and then was then sentenced to death. On the streets of Rouen on May 30 th 1431, Joan of Arc was executed by being burned at the stake. |
