Source : 1001 Nights Home Region : Persia Alignment : Lawful Good Gender : Female 001 Once upon a time, in the olden days of Persia, a cruel king called Shahryar was betrayed by his wife of several months. Furious, he resolved to never again be at the mercy of a spiteful woman. He decreed that each day he was to be presented with a virgin girl that he could marry, deflower, and behead the following morning. It is said that, before he came to know Scheherazade, he had already killed more than a thousand women this way. 002 Scheherazade was eldest daughter of the king’s Grand Vizier. She was beautiful, but more than that she was brilliant. Her father had done what he could to feed this brilliance of hers by ensuring that she always had the most talented teachers. He brought her books of history, philosophy, and poetry – whatever she asked. And so, most of her childhood and early adulthood was spent in the library with her lessons and her stories. She committed her favorites to heart and even wrote her own tales in her more inspired moments. Everyone who knew the girl called her pleasant and witty. It was only natural that the King desired her. 003 Though her father protested, Scheherazade agreed to marry the king knowing full well what such a union would mean for her. As a wedding present she asked to be able to see her beloved sister, Dunyazad, one more time before her inevitable execution. Before nightfall the sisters discussed their plan, and when the time came, Dunyazad put it into motion. She begged her sister to tell her one last bedtime story. Intrigued, the king deigned to allow it. And then Scheherazade told a story so enthralling that the king forgot to sleep. She stopped before the morning came despite his protests. She could not finish, she said – she needed her rest. Eager to hear the rest of the tale, the king agreed to spare her for one more day so that she might finish. 004 This continued for a thousand more nights, after which Scheherazade finally told the king that she had no stories left to tell. By that point, he was madly in love with her. He took her as a permanent wife and showered her with treasures and accolades. Hailed as the most intelligent woman in Persia, she lived the rest of her life at his side. |
