In the time since his summoning, the Rider Servant Percival had made something of a name for himself. He had been friendly, outgoing, and personable, for many people to the point of excess and annoyance. By this point it had become a sort of fixture of the area, with those who enjoyed it welcoming him with a smile for breaking up their otherwise serious and sometimes daunting task of saving the world, and those who disliked it simply learning to ignore it as best they could.
Which was why when it suddenly stopped after one particular mission it was noticeable to all. The sight of the usually exuberant Sir Percival unsmiling, lying on his back starring intensely at the ceiling seemed... wrong somehow. It was like seeing a sad puppy: even if one doesn't like dogs, the idea of them being constantly filled with joy is so ingrained that seeing something to the contrary is disturbing on some level.
'So was it all just pretend?' he found himself thinking. After everything he had gone through in his life, he'd thought he'd gotten better. He thought he'd become a true hero, a true knight who could do anything and save anyone. And yet, when the time came and the one whom he'd been tasked with protecting was in danger, he hadn't been able to live up to that. Another reminder that in so many ways, nothing had changed at all. He was still that starry eyed child who'd left his mother with dreams of becoming something more.
When would he ever reach "more" though?
